Alexander W. Yiu is a dedicated, experienced, and passionate lawyer. In August 2016, Mr. Yiu proudly joined the team at Hajduk Gibbs LLP as an Associate Lawyer.
Mr. Yiu carries out a general practice of law with particular interest in the areas of civil litigation, appellate advocacy, administrative law, aboriginal law, commercial litigation, insurance law, constitutional litigation, and human rights.
Most recently, Mr. Yiu served as legal counsel to the Court of Appeal of Alberta from 2014-2016. During this time, he was assigned to The Honourable Thomas W. Wakeling and The Honourable Myra B. Bielby. Prior to his role with the Court of Appeal, Mr. Yiu worked as an associate lawyer at a large full-service law firm in downtown Edmonton from 2010-2014. His practice areas included civil litigation with particular emphasis in insurance defence litigation.
Mr. Yiu is an experienced litigator and has appeared before the Provincial Court of Alberta, the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta, the Court of Appeal of Alberta, and the Supreme Court of Canada (leave to appeal). He has participated in numerous settlement meetings, pre-trial conferences, case management meetings, judicial dispute resolution (JDR) processes, Chambers applications, Special Chambers applications, and trials before the Provincial Court of Alberta and the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta. Mr. Yiu has also participated in private mediations before private mediators.
Mr. Yiu completed the LESA Intensive Trial Advocacy Course at the University of Calgary in 2011 as well as the LESA French language seminar La terminologie juridique en français in 2012. He is pleased to offer services to clients in French as well as Chinese (Cantonese dialect).
VOLUNTEER / COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES:
Mr. Yiu enjoys being active within and outside the legal community. He is an active member of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA). He is proud to serve as a current member of the CBA National Access to Justice Committee.
Mr. Yiu enjoys serving as a mentor to students and young lawyers. He is currently a sessional instructor at MacEwan University and teaches the Introduction to Law I course (Fall 2016) and Business Law (Winter 2017) course in the School of Business. He has also previously served as a CPLED Learning Group Facilitator to articling students seeking admission as new members of the Law Society of Alberta.
Most recently, Mr. Yiu has enjoyed volunteering his time to the Alberta Lawyers Assistance Society (Assist) to engage members of the Edmonton legal community in health and wellness initiatives through participation in its "Assist Fit" program.
Outside of the office, Mr. Yiu enjoys travelling abroad, catching up with his family and friends, reading, writing, and maintaining an active lifestyle. He practices mindfulness meditation and yoga every morning and is currently a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT 200) with Yoga Alliance.
